Catholics from 2 dioceses united for Feast of Corpus Christi

Approximately 900 Catholics from throughout the metropolitan area publicly celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 14.  The celebration was held at St. Agnes Parish in Roeland Park, Kansas.

Archbishop Joseph Naumann
and Bishop Finn, from the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph, lead nearly a mile-long procession from St. Agnes Church to Bishop Miege High School Stadium.  Prior to the procession, St. Agnes was open for adoration of the Holy Eucharistic.
“The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us, first of all, of the gift of the Eucharist.  The Church gives us this Feast, in part, to awaken us to the incredible miracle of His unique presence in the Eucharist that is available to us every week and every day in our Churches.

“The annual Corpus Christi celebration also challenges us to remember that at each Mass we are commissioned to bring the Jesus we received in the Eucharist to our homes, our neighborhoods, and our places of work.  The Corpus Christi Procession provides us with a unique opportunity to give public witness to our love for Jesus and our devotion to His unique presence in the Eucharist,” said Archbishop Naumann.

Corpus Christi processions were established more than 750 years ago to inspire people to take to the streets to bring the presence of God literally into the community.  During this devotional procession, Catholics have the opportunity to publicly profess their faith in the presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist.

Two years ago the first joint Corpus Christi celebration was held at St. Thomas More Parish in Kansas City, Missouri.  Last year, the Corpus Christi procession was part of the Living Rosary event that drew approximately 25, 000 people to Kauffman Stadium in May.
