 Marriage Preparation Classes

Marriage Preparation Ministry to Engaged Couples is available in all regions of the Archdiocese. The marriage preparation program is, in part, to enable you to review the decision you have made about your life together as you look at values, attitudes, communication, behavior patterns, and personal and faith beliefs. But the program also asks that you devote concentrated time, energy and thought to your relationship. It asks that you step outside the wedding plans for the Big Day and concentrate on the marriage which you are committing to for all the days of your life.

While couples are invited to contact their parish well in advance of the projected wedding date in able to secure the day and time that fits with their planning, it is imperative that couples contact their parish no later than six months before the anticipated wedding. Recognizing the differences of couples schedules because of travel and time availability, we offer the following three options of marriage preparation.

Engaged Encounter Weekend
The Engaged Encounter is presented by teams of married couples and a priest. Through a series of ideas presented by the team, the engaged couple is encouraged to discuss privately all aspects of their forthcoming married life. Topics which relate to different aspects of the Sacrament of Matrimony are used to guide the couples in their discussion. Weekends are held at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Five Weekly Sessions -  Small Groups
This marriage preparation takes place in a married couples home. Four to five engaged couples meet with a host couple for five weeks where the engaged couples explore in depth the attitudes and values that each brings to the relationship. Building on the understanding that many of our ideas, behaviors, values and faith beliefs are rooted in the families in which we grew up -- we take the opportunity to examine who we are in light of our family of origin and to best work with the differences we might encounter. These five weekly sessions are held in each region of the Archdiocese.

There is a third option for marriage preparation called the WEEKEND MARRIAGE PREPARATION. This program is for exceptional cases only. It is only for couples who cannot participate in either Engaged Encounter marriage preparation or the Five Weekly Session marriage preparation programs. The engaged couple must consult with the pastor before being placed on the WEEKEND MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM.

The BLENDED FAMILY program is is a workshop for couples preparing for a second marriage.  The couple needs to attend one weekend session.  The preparation weekends are held six times a year and use the materials from the standard marriage preparation program as well as focusing on dealing with the past, parenting and step-parenting issues, spiritual issues, etc.  If the marriage is a remarriage for either spouse, the Remarriage Preparation program is required.
