Catholic Fine Arts Council Formed

Painting display launches new Catholic Fine Arts Council

To celebrate the formation of the new Catholic Fine Arts Council for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, an oil painting by artist Jason Jenicke, Austin, Texas, will be displayed at the Chancery Library of the Archdiocese, 12615 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas, for the summer months.

Jenicke, the son of Gerry and Wayne Jenicke parishioners at St. Patrick Parish in Kansas City, Kansas was an artist-in-residence at St. James Academy for more than two years. His realistic style and spiritual subject matter has earned high praise from art critics and collectors.

The painting, one of a series of images of the sorrowful mysteries, depicts “The Agony in the Garden” and was loaned to the Archdiocese by John Menghini, Overland Park, Kansas.   Menghini, a former member of the board of directors of the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas, along with Archbishop Joseph Naumann and several other founders have been working for the past year on the formation of the Catholic Fine Arts Council whose mission will be consistent with the writing of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on artists and sacred art.

“The Catholic Fine Arts Council intends to foster an awareness of art production as a form of stewardship and worship in praise of God, our Creator,” said Lesle Knop, executive director for the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas and the Office of Stewardship and Development for the Archdiocese.“Among the goals is to help encourage Christian artists whose legacy could help pass on the faith and inspire future generations with their craftsmanship.” The Catholic Fine Arts Council was formed by a resolution of the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas in May. The organization seeks grant monies in order to help individuals, artists, educators and patrons to participate in the mission of the Council, which includes supporting Christian art education, archiving sacred art within the Archdiocese and increasing access, exhibit opportunities and dialogue for Christian artists.

Menghini will serve as chairman of the Catholic Fine Arts Council. Richard Anderson, Lake Quivira, will serve as vice-chairman.  Other founders areMichael Podrebarac, liturgy consultant for the Archdiocese; Monsignor Vincent Krische, pastor of St. Ann’s Parish, Mission; Ken Mellard, Leawood, past president of the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas; Kathy Calligari, Leawood, a board member and special events chairperson of the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas; and Knop.
