8th Grade Forum - "Life Matters!" Day

We are so excited to host 575 8th Graders for this educational LIFE MATTERS event!  Below is a description of what you can expect to learn.  Click Here for a printable version.

Purpose of this Event
“I have come that you may have life, and have it to the fullest…” John 10:10

To educate and inspire our 8th grade students on the dignity and sanctity of all life, from conception to natural death. To help them know and believe that God made them in His image and likeness and that their life matters! We want our 8th graders to leave this day knowing that:

  • Life is a precious gift from God
  • God loves each of them and desires a real personal relationship with them
  • As Catholics we are called to defend and protect the most vulnerable lives

General Assembly Presentation
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6

Terry Beatley – author of “What If We’ve Been Wrong?” and President of the Hosea Initiative (hosea4you.org).  Terry’s presentation is about educating, restoring, and unifying America around a culture of life ethic by fulfilling a promise to Dr. Bernard Nathanson. She provides a historical perspective of how Dr. Nathanson helped to bring about legalized abortion by deceiving Americans and the Courts, but how after his conversion, he became a staunch defender of life. His story gives us great hope for today!

Rotating Sessions:

“Theology of the Body Intro” –

(STA) Presented by Sam & Beth Meier (Sam works in the Marriage & Family Life Ministry at the Archdiocese, and Beth teaches 7th/8th Grade at Prince of Peace).

(SJA) Presented by Chris & Katie Walters (both Chris and Katie teach Theology at St. James Academy)

  • Scripture's teaching on the dignity of the human person
  • Our bodies matter and what we do with our bodies matters
  • Description of the Trinity > The Father pours out His love to the Son who receives it and the love is so profound that a new life is made - the Holy Spirit. Same in marital love. God calls many of us to participate in this love through His beautiful design called marriage.
  • We are created to love. Human sexuality is good and made by God to unify a husband and wife and to bring children into this world. Children are a gift from God and a blessing to marriages.
  • It is good when we follow God's plan. When we stray from His plan, we often expose ourselves to physical/spiritual/psychological risks and unnecessary suffering. God does not want this for us!
  • The Devil wants to attack and distort the beautiful aspects of our humanity – marriage, family, human sexuality. There is great distortion of sexuality in our culture.
  • The Church promotes modesty and chastity to help us follow God’s awesome plan!

“The Science of Life”

presented by Catholic Medical Students (SJA) (STA)

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works!” Psalm 139:13

  • Science is on the Pro-Life Side!
  • An embryo has its own unique DNA, separate from its mother’s – it is a distinct human person!
  • More importantly, we know that God is the creator of all life because he tells us through scripture
  • Show Video - https://www.archkck.org/prolife-unplanned-pregnancy “Your Life Before Birth”
  • “Did you Know?” information to share:
    • 2/3 of all abortions are done within the first 8 weeks
    • Science also proves there are physical and lifelong psychological risks to women who have abortions – increased risk of depression & suicide, guilt, shame, often suffering alone because they don’t want to tell anyone.
  • Spiritual Adoption program
  • End-of-Life: We as Catholics, are called to defend the lives of the most vulnerable. This includes the unborn, those with disabilities, vulnerable children who are orphaned, also the elderly. Keep all life in your prayers!
  • **There will not be discussion of abortion procedures or photos of abortion victims. If questions are asked about these specifics, the presenters will tell the students that this is something they should talk to their parents about.

“Pregnancy Centers – Saving & Empowering Lives!”

Presented by Leah Conner, Executive Director of Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic & Diane Drouhard, Executive Director of Olathe Pregnancy Center, and employees.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

  • What are pregnancy centers – Provide information/help/resources/support so that a woman or couple in a crisis situation will choose life for their child!
  • How do they: Save lives? Empower women? Empower men?
  • What services do pregnancy centers provide?
    • Spiritual support – Bible studies & friendship
    • Education!! Healthy pregnancy, parenting skills, good life decisions
    • Adoption information
    • Connection with a doctor
    • Material supplies – diapers, formula, clothing, baby items
  • What is the mindset of a woman or a couple who is coming to a pregnancy center in a crisis situation?
  • Help kids understand too, that the best response of the pregnancy center is to have love and compassion for their clients. Not to judge.
  • The pregnancy centers want kids in 8th grade: to know God’s plan for their lives, to be educated, and to make good, holy decisions so they do not need the help of a pregnancy center in the future. HOWEVER, if they or a friend are ever in a crisis situation, they need to know that people are here to help CHOOSE LIFE!
